Speaking at a meeting with members of the government, President Vladimir Putin expressed the hope that Georgia’s future legitimately elected authorities would do all they can to restore the centuries-old traditions of friendship between Russia and Georgia. Mr Putin emphasised that this can be the only possible objective for Russia’s policy towards Georgia

The President said that there is nothing unexpected about the events in Georgia, noting that the change of regime there is the logical result of a series of foreign and domestic policy mistakes made by the former authorities.

Mr Putin added, however, that the pressure used to help bring about this changeover is cause for concern.
