The lack of ideological restrictions have significantly increase the spectrum of Russian culture and given it more opportunities in the world, President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of the Council for culture and art. By invitation of the President, the UNESCO General Director Koichiro Matsuura took part in the meeting

The Russian President noted that Russia fully shares UNESCO’s position in support and development of the “dialogue of civilizations”, on which the stability of the world order depends, and the prosperity of every country.

Among the important directions of cooperation with UNESCO, the President singled out the role of Russia in the development of so-called non-material culture – the development of folklore, traditional trades, ways of life, customs and national holidays – noting the importance of the Convention on protecting non-material cultural heritage that was passed recently by UNESCO.
