The fight against corruption in Russia is still being waged ineffectively, said President Vladimir Putin at the first session of the Council for the Fight against Corruption. He called for realistic and exact measures to be taken to combat this evil

January 12, 2004

The Russian leader said he was in favour of establishing civil control over the authorities and instructed the council to draw up bills with regard to this issue. The more effective and stronger the institutes of civil control are, the fewer the chances for abuse will be, Vladimir Putin said.

The head of state said that one of the council’s main priority areas of work was to conduct constant and systematic anti-corruption studies of legislation. Vladimir Putin said that articles that could lead to abuse and opportunities for corruption had to be identified both in current legislation and bills being prepared.
