Minister Stanislav Ilyasov told President Vladimir Putin that by March 1, 2004 tent camps for temporarily displaced Chechen residents would close

January 16, 2004, Novo-Ogaryovo

Mr Ilyasov said work had begun to evaluate the damages to Chechen houses in order to reimburse the people for their lost property. At the moment, people who lost their private homes in Chechnya and were currently residing in Ingushetia, were receiving compensation payments. Five thousand people were to receive compensation for their lost property in the first quarter of the year.

The Minister told the President about reconstruction works in Grozny.

Mr Ilyasov said the Chechen population exceeded 1 million people. In connection with this, the President asked Mr Ilyasov about creating new jobs in the republic. The Minister said that out of 460,000 able-bodied people, 170,000 were unemployed. The Government planned to settle the problem by giving a boost to the development of the processing industries in the Chechen economy.
