President Vladimir Putin sent a message to the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, in connection with Chechen President Akhmat Kadyrov's visit to Saudi Arabia

January 17, 2004

The message said, in part:

“I am satisfied with the progress of the Saudi-Russia relations, which will further strengthen owing to the practical implementation of crucial agreements reached during Your Highness’ visit to Moscow last September. In connection with this, I would like to confirm that we are determined to further broaden our multilateral cooperation with Saudi Arabia, promote open dialogue, including our personal contacts. Hence, we attach great importance to the fact that the legally elected President of the Chechen Republic paid his first foreign visit to Saudi Arabia.

“We believe that it is of tremendous significance to reach consensus on the Chechen issue with the Muslim world, of which Saudi Arabia is one of the leaders. I hope that your meetings with the head of the Chechen Republic will promote deeper understanding of the objectives in our work to settle political and socio-economic issues in the republic. We believe the Muslim community will join the reconstruction processes in Chechnya, including UNESCO’s efforts.”

The message was delivered to the leadership of Saudi Arabia by Akhmat Kadyrov during his talks in Riyadh.
