Computers cannot take the place of books for children, Russian President Vladimir Putin believes. He said this at the opening of the internet site ”The Russian President for school-age citizens“

January 19, 2004

Vladimir Putin said he hoped that the new ”children's“ site of the Russian President would become a means by which young citizens of the country can widen their outlook. At the same time, a computer cannot replace books or conversations with interesting people, Vladimir Putin believes.During the opening of the site, which was held at the President's Kremlin residence, an Internet conference was held with the Centre of telecommunications and information systems in education in the Yaroslav Oblast. Children there actively participate in the work of the centre.

Replying to their question as to why the site has little information on the personality of the current Russian President, and on Vladimir Putin's school years, President Putin answered: ”We believe that this information is not of primary importance.“ The main issue should be the life and activity of the state, and children's familiarity with the problems of the country's development, the President stressed. The most important thing is to explain to young people their rights and obligations, to help deal with the state system of Russia, and choose the right profession. Vladimir Putin said that he did not think the site would have information connected with him as a personality.

The Russian President proposed to create a public board for the site to develop and manage it.

The address of the internet site ”The Russian President for school-age citizens“ is www.uznai-prezidenta.ru
