Semyon Vainshtok, the head of Transneft Company informed President Vladimir Putin that the second section of the Baltic Pipeline System, which can transport 42 million tons of oil a year, has been completed

February 20, 2004

This gives Russia a new route for transporting energy resources to Europe. Mr Putin noted that this kind of diversification of possibilities is very important for the country.

The new Primorsk oil terminal can work year-round, unlike the oil terminal at Novorossiisk, which is closed for 80–90 days a year due to weather conditions.

The President noted that given Russia’s increasing oil production and the rising demands of its partners’ economies, the country now has to focus on developing the pipeline transport system.
