February 26, 2004, Khabarovsk

During the meeting, the President said that he had signed instructions for the Government on the development of a pipeline transport system in Russia’s eastern regions.

The region’s transport infrastructure should be comprehensively modernised, taking into account the development of various types of transport and communications and the energy sector, President Putin said.

Since the construction of the Bureya hydropower plant was continuing, the conference discussed the need to change the route linking the Baikal-Amur and the Trans-Siberian Railways and the construction of dozens of kilometers of new track.

The development of a new Russian Far-Eastern fleet, local airlines, a railway branch to Yakutia and an oil and gas pipeline from Yakutia to the main pipeline which will run to the Russian Far East were also discussed, as well as plans to build an oil pipeline from Nakhodka.
