President Vladimir Putin phoned Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar to express his sympathy over the terrorist attacks in Madrid that took many lives

During the day, 10 explosions rocked Madrid. Seven were near the Atocha railway station, killing about 200 people and injuring over 1,200, according to preliminary estimates.

During the telephone conversation, President Putin expressed his support for the Spanish leadership and his solidarity with the Spanish people. He confirmed his readiness to closely cooperate in the fight against terrorism.

Previously, he had sent messages of condolences to Spanish King Juan Carlos I and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar.
