President Vladimir Putin exchanged messages with New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark in connection with the 60th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and New Zealand

April 13, 2004

Mr Putin’s message to Ms Clark said, in part: “The relations between Russia and New Zealand are based on the traditions of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation. Our country remembers well the contribution to the common victory over fascism made by the New Zealand sailors who took an active part in the Northern Convoys operations during the Second World War. It is symbolic that the diplomatic ties between our countries were established during that period.

“We note with satisfaction the progressive development of the relations between Russia and New Zealand in recent years. I am convinced that there are many opportunities for strengthening bilateral cooperation in various areas and expanding the interaction between our countries in regional affairs.”
