President Vladimir Putin was briefed on the growth of recidivist crime in the country by Prosecutor-General Vladimir Ustinov

April 22, 2004, Novo-Ogaryovo

More than a third of the people released from jail re-offend. The rate of recidivism among those convicted of very serious crimes, including murder, is almost 50%.

The Prosecutor-General attributed the trend to the fact that in the last two years, persons released from prison have not been subject to administrative surveillance.

Mr Ustinov said that the Prosecutor-General’s Office was about to restore administrative surveillance.

The Prosecutor-General also noted the improved cooperation with the CIS countries, in particular Georgia and Azerbaijan, on extradition issues.
