President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma answered journalists' questions

April 23, 2004, Yalta

Russian-Ukrainian treaties on the state border and cooperation in the Azov-Kerch area are necessary to strengthen relations between the two countries and contribute to the development of the political dialogue, business and cultural cooperation, Mr Putin said.

Speaking about the treaty on the state border, the Russian President noted that it removes the existing differences and creates conditions for the development of Russian-Ukrainian relations in the economic and cultural fields.

President Putin described the decision on the Azov-Kerch area as balanced and mutually beneficial for both Russia and Ukraine. According to the Russian head of state, the treaty gives momentum to the development of travel, fishing and environmental protection.

During the press conference, Mr Putin answered questions on the prospects for the joint gas transportation consortium, the future of the Common Economic Space and the situation in Iraq.
