Victory Day is a holiday shared by the peoples of Russia and the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States

May 9, 2004

Vladimir Putin paid tribute to the feat achieved by veterans of the Great Patriotic War, stressing that they did not allow the country to be brought to its knees and showed that our Motherland has and will always have great reserves of strength.

The President recalled the importance of not forgetting the lessons of the war when countries joined forces to defeat fascism.

Speaking at the military parade commemorating victory in the Great Patriotic War, the President noted that the swastika can still be seen in the world today and fascist ideas still live on. To this has been added a new evil, that of terrorism. The world community’s mission today is to join forces to fight terrorism, Mr Putin said.
