Russia and the European Union signed a declaration of support for Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organisation at the Russia-European Union summit in Moscow

May 21, 2004

Russia should be a member of the World Trade Organisation, but on conditions it considers acceptable, President Vladimir Putin said at a press conference following the summit.

The declaration of support that has been signed is a long-awaited balanced document that is the result of a compromise and is expected to have a positive influence on WTO accession talks with other partners – the United States and China.

The President noted that Russia did not strictly tie the WTO issue to the question of the Kyoto Protocol, but that the steps taken by the European Union would inevitably have a positive impact on deciding the issue of Russia’s ratification of the Kyoto Protocol.
