President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Director of the Federal Customs Service Alexander Zherikhov

September 23, 2004, Novo-Ogaryovo

Mr Zherikhov told the President that the service is ready to work within the framework of the Common Economic Space (CES), including participation in the work of the CES common tariff body.

Mr Zherikhov said that modernising customs procedures and harmonising customs tariffs are priorities for his service in connection with the creation of the Common Economic Space.

The meeting also discussed cooperation between the Russian customs service and its partners in European countries, and the freight traffic situation in Kaliningrad.

Also discussed were plans to introduce electronic procedures for carrying out customs formalities for goods, which Mr Zherikhov said would help to reduce the level of corruption in the customs service.

Mr Zherikhov told the President that the Federal Customs Service has almost met its 2004 customs duty collection target and has already transferred to the budget 806 billion roubles of its planned target of 852 billion roubles.

Economic Development and Trade Minister German Gref also took part in the meeting.
