Dmitry Medvedev sent a greeting to the participants and guests of the II International Great Russian Literature Festival

June 5, 2008

The greeting reads, in particular:

”It is symbolic that the festival is being held for the second time in Crimea, a place inextricably linked with the names of the classics of Russian literature. The beauty of Crimean land inspired Alexander Pushkin, Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, Ivan Bunin and many other great writers and poets.

Russian language is one of the most complex, emotive and expressive languages. It is more than simply a powerful foundation on which a rich and unique culture developed. It represents the link between Russia and its compatriots abroad, unites the Russian-speaking diaspora throughout the world, and brings its members spiritually closer to their homeland. And it is very important that such forums promote Russian language and its popularization.

I am confident that the festival will provide new opportunities for strengthening scientific and cultural ties with compatriots, launching joint educational projects, and that its rich programme will be of great interest among professionals and amateurs of Russian literature.“

In keeping with tradition the festival opens on June 6th, Alexander Pushkin's birthday.
