Attempts to make advances to terrorists, pursue plans that seek only the benefit of the moment, and similar lines of conduct, are unacceptable

October 5, 2004

Speaking at a ceremony at which the ambassadors of eight countries presented their letters of accreditation, President Vladimir Putin said that terrorists are trying to destabilise entire regions, set peoples against each other, and in so doing have an influence on geopolitical processes. Terrorism feeds off social problems and has a destructive effect in every area of life and on every country.

This is why Russia so insistently calls for all to join forces against this evil. The lessons of history show that no one can hope to wait out the danger by sitting in the trenches.

International solidarity and a refusal to allow any kind of double standards are essential.

It is important not only to neutralise the terrorists themselves but also to completely isolate their political lobbyists and those who inspire their ideas.

This approach forms the foundation of the anti-terrorist initiatives that Russia has proposed to the current session of the United Nations General Assembly, the President said.
