The purpose of Russia's military base in Tajikistan is to neutralise terrorist invasions and assist the war on drug trafficking

October 17, 2004

Previously, President Vladimir Putin and President Emomali Rakhmonov legally registered the Russian military presence in Tajikistan. According documents were signed in Dushanbe: a Protocol on the exchange of documents on the ratification of the Agreement on the status and conditions of the presence of the Russian military base on the territory of Tajikistan of 16 April 1999; the Agreement between Russia and Tajikistan on the procedure for the Tajik side to use movable property given for temporary use to the Russian military base.

On the day after the documents were signed at the military base in the presence of the two Presidents, the State flag of Russia was raised.

The opening of a military base is very important and necessary decision for two friendly, allied nations, that meets the basic interests of the Russian and Tajik peoples, said Mr. Putin in a speech to soldiers. Constant operation of the Russian military base and strengthening it will be a guarantee of stability in the region. Together with the aviation base in Kyrgyzstan, the military base in Tajikistan will become a reliable link in the common system of collective security in the Central Asian area.
