A meeting of the Council of heads of member countries of the Central Asian Cooperation Organisation (CAC) was held in Dushanbe with the participation of President Vladimir Putin

October 18, 2004

The decision to join the CAC was dictated by Russia’s own national interests, President Vladimir Putin said at the meeting.

Russia is prepared to become involved in the realisation of economic projects in the organisation in a very short timeframe, and also of joint measures in the war on terrorism, religious extremism, and drug trafficking.

In joining this organisation, Russia intends to take an active part in the expansion of regional economic cooperation. This primarily concerns rational and effective development and use of water and fuel and energy resources of the region, the development of the agroindustrial complex, and the formation of a common transport space. This involves mutually beneficial use of the network of international transport corridors on the territory of CAC member countries.
