The decision to join the Central Asian Cooperation Organisation (CAC) was dictated by Russia's own national interests

October 18, 2004

At the meeting of the Council of Heads of CAC Member Countries in Dushanbe, President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia sees major prospects for joint work in the framework of the CAC, and is prepared to become involved in economic projects in a very short time frame, and also in joint measures in the war on terrorism, religious extremism, and drug trafficking.

Speaking of economic cooperation in the framework of the organisation, Mr. Putin indicated that Russia was prepared to join hydroelectric, food and transport consortiums.

President Putin also noted that the favourable development of the entire Eurasian continent depends on the situation in Central Asia. He said that he was sure that the CAC is capable of becoming one of the reliable supports for productive work in realising this goal.
