Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma arrived at the international children's center “Artek.”

November 12, 2004, Crimea, Ukraine

The two Presidents visited the Artek school, where around 300 children from Beslan are currently studying. Mr Putin and Mr Kuchma, along with President of North Ossetia Alexander Dzasokhov, visited several classrooms where lessons were taking place.

The two Presidents met separately with pupils from Beslan School No. 1 and their families, who were among the people taken hostage during the tragic events in September. On behalf of all the pupils, Mr Putin thanked Mr Kuchma for the warm welcome the schoolchildren from Beslan had received.

The two Presidents spoke with the Beslan children and their families and answered their questions. Many of the questions raised concerned rebuilding schools, a kindergarten and other infrastructure in the town.

After visiting the school, Mr Putin and Mr Kuchma had their photographs taken with the children and spent another 15 minutes in discussion with them and their families in front of the building.
