The leaders of two countries, Vladimir Putin and Hugo Chavez, held eye-to-eye talks. They discussed relevant issues of bilateral cooperation and some international problems.

Then the consultations went on in an extented format and members of the delegations joined the Presidents. This time they focused on the situation on the world oil market.

Mr Putin warmly congratulated Mr Chavez and his Venezuelan colleagues with the results of the national referendum. He expressed the assuarance that Mr Chavez's victory was a persuasive one and helped to lessen internal tension in the country.

At the results of the summit the heads of state adopted a joint statement. In the presence of the Presidents of Russia and Venezuela, a series of bilateral documents were also signed concerning cooperation in the economic sphere. Along with a protocol on the completion of bilateral talks on access to the goods and serves market in the framework of Russia joining the WTO, a memorandum on mutual assistance was signed between LUKOIL and the Venezuelan oil company PDVSA, along with an agreement on cooperation to oppose legalisation of income obtained by criminal means, and an international agreement on cooperation in areas of the fuel and energy complex.

After signing documents Vladmir Putin and Hugo Chavez held a news conference. In his press statement Mr Putin emphasised, in particular, that Russia will cooperate with Venezuela in building energy objects in this country, and develop relations with Venezuela in the military and technical sphere, and in transport infrastructure.
