Russia will not take on responsibility for full resolution of conflicts in the post-Soviet area, but it is prepared to act as an intermediary

December 6, 2004

Russia is sincerely interested in the resolution of these conflicts, as it wants the region to become stable, said President Vladimir Putin, answering journalists’ questions after the completion of Russian-Turkish talks.

In solving any complex issues – such as regulating the political confrontation in Ukraine or Abkhazia – Russia must continue to play an intermediary role, as it understands the full complexity of these problems better than others.

Commenting on the situation in Ukraine, the Russian President noted that it was unacceptable for any threats to be made against candidates participating in Presidential elections, or for any arbitrary interpretation or changes to legislation in the interests of one side. Russia cannot support this development of events, even if some call it democracy.

Fulfilling its intermediary mission, the Russian leadership continues to work with the existing regime, and acts absolutely correctly and openly, not secretly. Russia is prepared to work with any President elected by the people of Ukraine.
