President Vladimir Putin took part in the opening ceremony of the suspension bridge across the Neva

December 15, 2004, St. Petersburg

A new bridge across the Neva is a part of the St. Petersburg ring road. It will connect the southern and northern districts of the city with the Kola federal highway.

There are several examples of such constructions in countries of the former Soviet Union: the bridge in Riga across the Daugava river, in Kiev across the Dnepr, and also the recently built bridge across the Ob’ near the city of Surgut in western Siberia.

In accordance with the architectural scheme, the project envisages the construction of two flyovers. The calculated speed of traffic across the bridge is 120 km/h.

The complete length of the bridge is 2,570 metres, and the main span is 382 metres. The height of the pylons is 126 metres. The bridge is 30 metres above the water, which will ensure that riversea class boats are able to pass unhindered and will enable traffic to cross the bridge 24 hours a day.

The President thanked the bridge builders and noted that in Russia, not only are the best traditions of the national engineering school alive, but that this school is also developing, using the most advanced technology.
