President Vladimir Putin held an away meeting of the State Council's Presidium on developing international cooperation in the area of nuclear and radiation safety

December 16, 2004, Udomlya, Tver Region

Production growth and development of the housing and utilities sector require consistent and balanced efforts to develop the country’s energy sector. This increase in energy production should focus on quality growth through the introduction of innovative and energy-saving technology, Mr Putin said.

The President said that ensuring technological processes in the energy production sector are protected from criminal factors is a priority task. Work also has to be done to minimise the negative impact of nuclear energy production on the environment, including through the use of modern technology to treat and process nuclear materials.

Following the meeting, the President met with governor of Tver Region Dmitriy Zelenin. Mr Putin discussed with the governor the impact the launch of the Kalinin Nuclear Power Station’s third power generating unit would have on the region’s social and economic life.
