In connection with the severe natural disaster in Southeast Asia which entailed numerous human deaths and inflicted serious material damage upon the region, the Russian President has forwarded telegrams offering condolences to Indian President Abdul Kalam, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinnawatra, and President of Sri Lanka Chandrika Kumaratunga.
