The General Prosecutor's office, as a coordinating centre, has the powers and the necessary resources to ensure precise interaction of all the elements of the law-enforcement system

January 21, 2005

Society’s trust in the work of the General Prosecutor’s Office and the law-enforcement system as a whole depends in many ways on the success of solving this system task, said Vladimir Putin at an enlarged meeting of the board of the General Prosecutor’s Office.

The main task of prosecutors remains to ensure supremacy of the law in the sphere of protecting citizens’ rights, their security and the interests of state and society that are protected by law.

An entire series of terrorist acts has shown the necessity for serious reorganisation of state activity in the security sphere. Citizens of Russia expect specific actions from the authorities both in finding and punishing criminals, and in organising effective protection of their rights to a safe life.

It is not only necessary to effectively oppose acts of terror themselves, but also to establish a system of prediction and analysis work, and ensure full prosecution of individuals involved in terrorist acts. It is necessary to detect areas where potential conflict situations arise which are used by the ideologists of terrorism and extremism to inflame national and religious intolerance.
