President Vladimir Putin met with Yevgeny Velikhov, academician and president of the Kurchatov Institute

Mr Putin congratulated Mr Velikhov on his 70th birthday and discussed nuclear energy development issues and international cooperation in this area with him.

In a telegram of congratulations sent to Mr Velikhov formerly, Mr Putin said, in particular: “Fundamental works and major discoveries in the field of nuclear physics have brought you deserved recognition and given you great authority in the scientific community. You have always been distinguished by your devotion to your work, your broad spectrum of interests and your encyclopaedic knowledge”.

A presidential decree has been issued awarding Mr Velikhov the order “For Services to the Fatherland” II degree for his great contribution to developing nuclear energy and his many years of fruitful scientific activity.
