The consequences of the tsunami in South-East Asia make it necessary to think about how to organise work in predicting such catastrophes in Russia

February 2, 2005

This catastrophe has shown that Russia, a country where a quarter of the territory is made up of regions of seismic danger, where 20 million people live, needs an effective system for predicting natural disasters, Vladimir Putin said at a meeting at the Emergency Ministry.

The system for monitoring and predicting natural disasters functions, a large database has been accumulated, and specialists are working. However, it is clear that all these elements require strengthening, greater coherency and better equipment, Mr. Putin said.

The President ordered the Government to correct plans to modernise the national system of predicting natural disasters.
