Vladimir Putin congratulated the Buddhists of Russia on the holiday of Sagaalgan (the New Year of the lunar calendar)

February 8, 2005

The message of congratulations reads:

“This holiday, which marks the beginning of the New Year of the lunar calendar is considered as a symbol of renewal of people and nature, hope and good expectations.

The values of Buddhism, that have come to us from many centuries ago, are inalienable from the spiritual and cultural inheritance of Russia. They help people to come together and, understand each other, and help to strengthen the moral foundations of society.

I am sure that careful protection of inter-ethnic and inter-religious harmony, and the harsh suppression of any manifestations of nationalism is the key condition for the successful and prosperous development of our country.”
