Dmitry Medvedev introduced a draft law to the State Duma reducing the number of electoral signatures needed in support of federal candidate lists for members of the lower house of parliament

February 27, 2009

The draft Federal law implements the relevant proposal made by the President of the Russian Federation in his address to the Federal Assembly (parliament) on 5 November 2008.

Currently political parties which gather signatures in support of their candidate on the federal list for election to the State Duma, have to gather no less than 200,000 signatures. This draft law stipulates the reduction of the number of signatures needed to 120 thousand during the two nearest electoral cycles.

The relevant alterations will be introduced to the following Federal Laws: “On the Election of Deputies to the State Duma of the Russian Federation Federal Assembly”, “On the Election of the President of the Russian Federation”, and “On the Basic Guarantees of Electoral Rights and Rights to Participate in a Referendum of Citizens of the Russian Federation”.
