Vladimir Putin made a speech before the concert in honour of veterans of the Great Patriotic War from Russia and CIS countries

May 8, 2005, Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow

The Russian President said that it is still impossible to realise the true scale of the Great Patriotic War. The concept of this catastrophe is beyond understanding and is one of the most terrible crimes against humanity, Vladimir Putin said.

The Russian President called Victory Day a great, truly national holiday. Mr. Putin congratulated veterans and said that every year they are justly honoured with great warmth and respect. The President’s opening words were met with applause from the audience.

Before the beginning of the evening, the Banner of Victory was ceremonially carried into the hall.
