Vladimir Putin held a work meeting with Roman Abramovich, the Governor of Chukotka Autonomous District

May 27, 2005, The Kremlin, Moscow

The problems and achievements of Chukotka were discussed.

At the beginning of the meeting, Roman Abramovich reported that during his work as Governor the gross regional product had risen by five times, and the average salary had reached 19,000 rubles(approx. 700 US dollars).

Noting these positive results, the President also said that according to his information, in 2004 the financial situation of enterprises in Chukotka had worsened and they had encountered problems of production distribution. Mr.Putin showed Mr.Abramovich the according statistics.

Because of the growth of prices on energy resources, such as on diesel fuel, the price of production had increased, the Governor said and stressed that the district administration was trying to restrain these processes.

Mr.Putin asked about the level of salary in the budget sphere, and also whether there were delays in salary payments. According to the Governor’s information, the salary of budget workers in the district comes to 15,000–15,500 rubles, and there are no delays in payment.
