President Vladimir Putin laid a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin Wall

June 22, 2005, Aleksandrovsky Garden, Moscow

On the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the Russian President honoured the memory of the millions of fellow citizens who gave their lives for their country.

Soldiers of an Honourary Guard carried a wreath of white and red roses on fir branches. Vladimir Putin adjusted the ribbon in the colours of the Russian flag that was attached to the wreath, bearing the inscription in gold letters: “To the Unknown Soldier from the President of the Russian Federation.”

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the highest leadership of the country, government, parliament, the Armed Forces and veterans.

After the wreath-laying, Mr Putin talked with veterans. Then the President walked along the Kremlin Wall, where memorial pedestals are set bearing the names of Hero Cities. The President laid two red carnations by each of them.
