Vladimir Putin addressed Chinese readers on the occasion of the publication of a series of books by Soviet writers about the Great Patriotic War

June 22, 2005

The publishing house Renmin Chubanshe has published the following books in Chinese: “They Fought for their Homeland” by Mikhail Sholokhov, “The Unconquered” by Boris Gorbatov, “He was called a Man of Legend” by Ivan Leonov, “The Living and the Dead” by Konstantin Simonov and others.

Text of the address: “Dear Chinese friends,

Before you are books by renowned Soviet writers devoted to one of the most tragic and at the same time one of the most heroic pages in world history – the war against Nazism.

This year we are celebrating the anniversary of the Great Victory. For our people, this is a special date. 60 years ago the most terrible war in the history of our nation ended. A war which took millions of lives, ruined people’s fates, and destroyed towns and villages. In Russia we hold the memory sacred of heroes who saved their Homeland and the world from Nazism.

The victory was won by our nation together with other nations of the anti-Hitler coalition. It because a common, truly invaluable achievement of people of different nationalities and religions.

One of the bright, heroic pages of the history of those years was the joint war on Japanese militarism. I am sure that Russia and the People’s Republic of China, will continue to make a significant contribution to strengthening peace and mutual understanding on the planet, based on long-term relations of partnership and strategic cooperation.

I hope that this publication will be interesting to readers of different generations – to everyone who wants to know as much as they can about Russia and its history.”
