President Vladimir Putin observed Northern Fleet military exercises at the Barents Sea from on board the heavy nuclear cruiser Peter the Great

August 17, 2005

The exercises involved ships, submarines and naval aviation. The cruisers Admiral Chabanenko, Peter the Great and the destroyer Ushakov fired at test targets. The strategic missile-carrying submarine Yekaterinburg fired a Sineva intercontinental ballistic missile to the Kura testing ground in Kamchatka. The missile’s warheads successfully reached their target at the calculated time.

The President heard the Naval Command’s reports on the navy’s operational and combat readiness plans and its development prospects for the period from 2010 to 2016.

In the afternoon, Mr Putin observed the operations of deck aircraft from the heavy aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, which was following a course parallel to that of the Peter the Great.

Mr Putin then had a tour of the Peter the Great and talked to the sailors.
