President Vladimir Putin made a official visit to the Kingdom of Belgium

Mr Putin was welcomed by King of Belgium Albert II at Melsbrook Airport, from where they went to the royal residence of Laken Palace.

Following the official photograph ceremony, Mr Putin and King Albert II had talks over breakfast given by the King in Mr Putin’s honour.

The President then held talks with Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt.

The Russian-Belgian Joint Action Programme for 2005–2007 was signed in the presence of Mr Putin and Mr Verhofstadt following their talks.

Once the signing ceremony was over Mr Putin and Mr Verhofstadt held a joint press conference that discussed, among other issues, the question of cooperation between Russia and Europe in the energy sector.

Also on the programme of Mr Putin’s visit to Belgium was a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Column of Congress Memorial.

Mr Putin and King Albert II also attended the opening of the Europalia-Russia 2005 arts festival.
