President Vladimir Putin sent a message of congratulations to Austrian President Heinz Fischer and Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schussel on the occasion of National Day, the date commemorating Austria's enactment of the Constitutional Law on Permanent Neutrality

October 26, 2005

The message reads, in particular:

“The last 50 years have fully confirmed the wisdom of Austria’s decision to build a new, sovereign and democratic state, the cornerstone of which is the policy of permanent neutrality. In remaining firmly committed to its chosen course, your country has followed an independent foreign policy, has won the trust of the international community, becoming an important centre for European and international politics and diplomacy, and has built a strong federal state with a developed economy and stable democratic institutions.

It is pleasing to see that the multifaceted relations between Russia and Austria have developed fruitfully and in the spirit of good-neighbourliness over these last decades. At the foundation of our relations are the friendly feelings our peoples have for each other and their mutual trust and desire to strengthen peace and stability on the European continent and create an integrated Greater Europe without dividing lines.”
