The agreement on an alliance between Russia and Uzbekistan gives relations between the two countries a completely new quality and takes them to a maximum level of closeness

November 14, 2005, Grand Kremlin Palace, Moscow

The President of Uzbekistan’s official visit to Russia is a significant and historic event in the recent history of relations between Russia and Uzbekistan, President Vladimir Putin said following talks with President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov in the Kremlin.

The agreement signed between Russia and Uzbekistan represents more than just a new page in the agreements that bind the two countries. An alliance relationship represents the highest degree of trust in relations between sovereign states, Mr Putin said.

Russia and Uzbekistan are uniting their strength and resources and their immense human and cultural potential in the name of stability and progress in the region.

The President noted the particularly positive and open atmosphere that prevailed at the talks.

Mr Putin and Mr Karimov were also present for the signing of an agreement between the Russian Federal Drugs Control Service and the Interior Ministry of Uzbekistan on cooperation in combating the traffic in drugs and psychotropic substances and in control over precursors, and a cooperation agreement between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan.
