President Vladimir Putin congratulated ballerina Maya Plisetskaya on her birthday

November 20, 2005

Mr Putin, in Japan on an official visit, called Maya Plisetskaya to give her his congratulations, and said that he is one of the thousands, or rather, millions of people who know and love her and are genuine and appreciative fans of her talent.

The President signed a decree awarding the ballerina the Order for Services to the Fatherland first degree for her outstanding contribution to developing the choreographic arts in Russia and the world and for her many years of creative work. Mr Putin said during his phone call that he hopes to present the award this year in a ceremony at the Kremlin.

The President also sent a message of congratulations, which reads in particular:

“You are rightly counted among the celebrated creative masters for whom your work is not only a profession but also a calling. Audiences on every continent have applauded you, the great ballerina of our times, and have admired your beauty, grace and the unique achievement of your long creative career.

Your unsurpassed skill as a performer has left an indelible impression in the hearts of all who have had the good fortune to see you on stage.”
