Mr Putin congratulated Mrs Merkel on her official inauguration as Chancellor and wished her success in her new post.
Mrs Merkel thanked Mr Putin warmly for his congratulations and said she is certain that Russian-German cooperation will continue to develop very intensively.
The two leaders discussed upcoming plans for bilateral events at various levels, including at the top level, and agreed to keep in regular contact.
