The election of a legitimate representative assembly in Chechnya marks the conclusion of formal legal procedures to restore constitutional order in the republic

November 28, 2005, The Kremlin, Moscow

Opening the traditional Monday meeting with the Cabinet, President Vladimir Putin noted that the Chechen people and everyone who lives in Chechnya have once again convincingly demonstrated their strength of character, political maturity and organisational ability and have shown that no one and nothing can frighten them. Voter turnout at the election was more than 60 percent. The law enforcement agencies carried out their work without any problems.

But the President also said that much work still remains to be done in order to eradicate all the conditions that contribute to destabilisation. Action is needed to effectively implement the Russian government and the Chechen authorities’ plans to bring about social and economic recovery in the republic.
