Russia wants to enter the WTO and will continue the negotiating process under conditions that make sense for Russia's economy

December 16, 2005

The prospect of Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization was one of the main topics of Vladimir Putin's conversation with Russian journalists in the presidential residence Bocharov Ruchei.

Vladimir Putin declared that the WTO was founded and functions to guarantee free trade and economic relations and, that if one of Russia's partners proposes an exception which limits this freedom, then acceding to the organization becomes meaningless.

The President pointed out that Russia intends to continue talks on acceding to the WTO under conditions that make sense for Russia's economy.

At the moment such negotiations are being conducted at the Sixth WTO Ministerial Conference which is taking place in Hong Kong.
