The Ust-Luga port in the Leningrad region is one of Russia's major infrastructure projects over the past few decades

January 24, 2006

Vladimir Putin visited the Ust-Luga port and was very complimentary of the work done in building the port.

St Petersburg, the Leningrad Region and all of north western Russia must use their natural competitive advantages, including those linked with their geographical position. In his statement following the trip, the President emphasized that for that very reason, large-scale work to develop transport infrastructure in north western Russia is taking place.

Vladimir Putin encouraged developing the infrastructure of Russian ports and increasing their competitiveness. This includes modern technical equipment for ports' infrastructure, developing related projects linked to building highways and railways, and also improving administration.

Vladimir Putin said that it is necessary to pay more attention to environmental issues. Respecting environmental norms requires significant financial means. In building the Ust-Luga port, this accounts for eight to ten percent of the project's budget. However, the President emphasized that this is necessary.
