Uzbekistan's accession to the Eurasian Economic Community is the main outcome of the session of the Eurasian Economic Community Council in St Petersburg

January 25, 2006

Speaking at the press conference following the Eurasian Economic Community Inter-State Council’s session, President Vladimir Putin stressed that the summit’s main outcome was the signature of the protocol on Uzbekistan’s accession to the organisation’s founding treaty.

Mr Putin said he was certain that Uzbekistan’s participation in the Eurasian Economic Community would strengthen the organisation’s potential and contribute to more effective work on creating an integrated market.

The summit also approved an agreement on cooperation in organising an integrated currency market in the Eurasian Economic Community member states. This marks the first stage of the creation of a currency union, the President said.

Mr Putin noted that the Inter-State Council’s session in St Petersburg illustrated the organisation’s growing authority and underscored the common desire of all its participants to further the integration process.
