Ensuring citizens' safety, fighting corruption and restoring people's confidence that the laws are being upheld are fundamental conditions for Russia's economic and social development

February 3, 2006, Moscow

Speaking at a session of the Collegium of the Prosecutor General’s Office, President Vladimir Putin said that coordinating the law enforcement agencies’ efforts to fight crime is one of the key areas of the Prosecutor General’s Office’s work.

The President also called on the Prosecutor General’s Office to take a more pro-active approach to ensuring civil rights are upheld.

Mr Putin said that not only must the Prosecutor General’s Office identify cases where the law is being violated; it must also try to identify the trends, be able to forecast developments and take advance action to prevent situations that would have negative consequences for the country and for its economy and social sector.
