February 18, 2006, The Kremlin, Moscow

Mr Putin noted the great contribution Mr Magomedov, who has announced his decision to step down from his post as President of the State Council of Dagestan, has made to strengthening stability in the North Caucasus. The President proposed that Mr Magomedov become a member of the Commission for Strengthening Russian Statehood and Federal Relations.

Mr Putin noted the need to make a rapid decision on a candidate for the post of President of Dagestan.

The President discussed the situation in the republic with Mr Aliev, the speaker of the People’s Assembly of Dagestan. Dagestan has gone through a difficult period in its development, having to face attempts by terrorists and extremists to separate the region from the rest of Russia, Mr Aliev said. The current political, socio-economic and interethnic situation in the republic remains complicated. Mr Aliev said that the region’s leadership is taking a series of measures to stabilise the situation.
