President Vladimir Putin made an official visit to the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria

March 10, 2006, Algiers

Mr Putin was met at Houari Boumediene International Airport by President of Algeria Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Following the official welcome ceremony, the two leaders went to the El Mouradia Presidential Palace where they held one-on-one talks. The talks later continued with the participation of the two country’s delegations.

Settling problems concerning Algerian debts to Russia was the main result of the Russian-Algerian talks. The following agreements were also signed: Convention on Avoiding Double Taxation, an intergovernmental agreement on the encouragement and mutual protection of capital investments, and a cooperation agreement between the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Algerian Chamber of Industry.

Mr Putin met with the press following his talks with Mr Bouteflika.

The President then laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Heroes of the Revolution and viewed the Algerian capital from the viewing point.

A reception in honour of Mr Putin was later given at the People’s Palace by Mr Bouteflika.

The two leaders had another brief conversation before the beginning of the reception.
