During the high-level Russian-Chinese talks that took place in Beijing Vladimir Putin and President of the People's Republic of China Hu Jintao discussed topical issues concerning bilateral cooperation between their countries.

Following the talks a Joint Declaration was adopted.

Russia and China expressed their intention to develop their bilateral cooperation on the international stage, in the economic, investment, law enforcement, military and humanitarian spheres, and in the prevention and liquidation of natural and technological disasters.

The intensification of energy sector cooperation is particularly important. Both sides confirmed their intention to continue joint work on the construction of pipelines to deliver energy resources from Siberia to China.

Russia and China share the conviction that only by working together can the international community react effectively to new threats and challenges, including terrorism. The declaration underscores the need to tighten control over weapons of mass destruction. Both sides expressed their conviction that there is no alternative to the United Nations’ important role in resolving these issues. At the same time, Russia and China share the view that the time is ripe for reform of the United Nations, but their statement stresses the need to proceed carefully and avoid haste in carrying out these transformations.

Russia and China noted with satisfaction the positive role the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is playing in resolving a number of serious issues.

The two sides expressed their support for the rapid creation of a trilateral cooperation mechanism between Russia, China and India, as this would facilitate more complete realisation of their economic development potential and would also reinforce international action against new threats and challenges.

14 agreements were signed in the presence of Vladimir Putin and Hu Jintao.

Vladimir Putin also met with Russian journalists.

Before the Russian-Chinese talks began, Vladimir Putin visited the Russian Information Centre, whose main task is to provide information support for events taking place on the occasion of the Year of Russia in China. At the Centre the President launched the first ever Russian media website in Chinese – http://www.rian.cn.
