Russia needs education centres that will serve as a yardstick for improving higher education in the country and developing science

March 24, 2006

Speaking at a State Council meeting on education development in Russia, President Vladimir Putin said he hoped that financing for innovation in higher education as part of the priority national project in the education sector would have a positive impact and that the Education and Science Ministry would select higher education establishments that are genuinely pursuing innovative work and merit state support.

Mr Putin noted that despite the sizeable increase in funding for the education sector over recent years, radical modernisation has not taken place. The priority national project in the education sector aims precisely at providing the impulse needed for real change and transformation to take place.
